Mount Airy Hall of Fame to induct five new members

 During the public comment section, Wayne Evans of the Historical Society of Mount Airy announced the five new inductees to the Mount Airy Hall of Fame. 

 Hosted by the Historical Society of Mount Airy, the purpose of the Hall of Fame is to honor truly deserving people, living or deceased, of Mount Airy and the immediate surrounding areas who make the community a better place for everyone. The event also honors those who were born here and went on to bring honor and glory to the community through their efforts, deeds or life’s work outside of the area.  

“This year’s recipients are all recognized for their years of service,” Evans said. “…We have a very distinguished group for 2025.”

 Mary Jo Burkett – Holding multiple officer roles at the local and district levels for Rotary over many years, she joins her husband Paul who was inducted last year. 

 Adele Connolly – Active in multiple areas of the Historical Society of Mount Airy, she is chair of the Town’s Commission On Aging and Livability, volunteers at the Mount Airy Senior Center and serves on the board of directors for the Flat Iron Task Force. 

 Matt Heard – An active member and officer with the Mount Airy Volunteer Fire Company (MAVFC), he also serves on the board of directors for the Pine Grove Chapel and Cemetery and is leading an effort to clean and preserve graves onsite.  

 John ‘Jack’ Steel – The late postmaster for the Town, who passed away in 1999, was a charter member of the Mount Airy Lions Club. He held numerous positions with the nonprofit at the local and district level. 

 Fran Wimmer – For many years, she has given her time helping at a variety of Mount Airy Volunteer Fire Company and Auxiliary events such as carnivals, breakfasts and dinners. 

 The induction banquet will take place on March 18 at the American Legion Gold Star Post, 801 Prospect Rd. Social hour begins at 5 p.m. social with dinner and awards beginning at 6 p.m. Tickets for the ceremony may be purchased at Blossom and Basket Boutique, 3 N. Main St.

Boxes and Bags Bingo Feb. 8 The Historical Society of Mount Airy will be hosting their annual Boxes and Bags Bingo on Saturday, Feb. 8. Doors open at 5 p.m. and bingo starts at 7 p.m. at the Mount Airy Volunteer Fire Company Reception Hall (1008 Twin Arch Rd.). 

The event features filled box theme prizes and designer bags from Coach, kate spade, Vera Bradley and Crocs. 

The cost is $40 for two bingo packs. There will be 20 regular games, 5 specials, raffles and 50/50. Food and snacks will be available for purchase.

Nomination Information for Mount Airy Town Election on Tuesday, May 6, 2025 

Two citizen meetings will be held for the purpose of accepting nominations of candidates for Mayor and two Town Council positions, currently filled by Larry Hushour, Lynne Galletti and Stephen Domotor for the upcoming Tuesday, May 6, 2025, Mount Airy Election, and nominations will remain open between the two meetings:

* Tuesday, Feb. 18 - First Nomination Meeting at 7 p.m., at the Mount Airy Town Hall, 110 S. Main St., Mount Airy. 

* Tuesday, Feb. 25 - Second Nomination Meeting at 7 p.m., at the Mount Airy Town Hall, 110 S. Main St., Mount Airy -- when all nominations will be read and given to the Town Clerk to put on the ballot.

To run for elected office as Mayor qualified individuals shall have resided in the Town of Mount Airy for at least two years immediately preceding the election, must be at least 25 years of age and be a qualified voter in the Town.   

To run for elected office as a Councilperson qualified individuals shall have resided in the Town of Mount Airy for at least one year immediately preceding the election and shall be a qualified voter in the Town.

Nominations will be accepted at both Nomination Meetings and by contacting Holly McCleary, Town Clerk, at Town Hall, 301-829-1424 or via email at hmccleary@mountairymd.gov during the week between the two Nomination Meetings. Eligible individuals seeking elective office may submit a nomination. Eligible citizens may nominate an individual with the written consent of the nominee.

Ordinance 2024-24 moved to February meeting

A motion to “table” Ordinance 2024-24 was made and accepted by the council. This budget amendment would add $95,000 to Rails to Trails East for culvert and paving modifications. This ordinance will be on the February council meeting agenda.

The market season set to run Wednesdays from 3 to 7 p.m. in Watkins Park (615 Center St.) from May 7 until September 24.
