Code Enforcement Corner --- Fire Hydrants
Clean water is a resource we often take for granted. Our water supply is faced with many challenges, drought, contamination, and theft ---- yes theft!
We need your help to ensure that unscrupulous actors do not take the water we pay for and use.
The Town of Mount Airy Code states the following:
It shall be unlawful for any person, without previous written permission signed by an authorized official of the Town of Mount Airy, to open any fire hydrant within the limits of the Town of Mount Airy and to cause in any manner water to be discharged or withdrawn therefrom.
Violation of any of the provisions of this article is hereby declared to be a municipal infraction, and the amount of the infraction fine assessed therefore shall be $500.
We have seen an increase in various companies hooking up to and taking water from our hydrants without permission. This results in the loss of this valuable resource at a time when every drop is needed. In addition, it unfairly penalizes those that pay for this water.
If you see a company truck hooked to a fire hydrant taking pumping water from a Town hydrant, please call the Mount Airy Police at 911 or the non-emergency dispatch at 410-386-2860 to report it.
By working together and reporting these thefts, we can help to protect this valuable resource!
